Rojc Community Center
Our tour commences at the Rojc Community Center, housed in a historic Austro-Hungarian military complex. Originally built as the Franz Joseph Barracks in the late 19th century, it served various military purposes until its conversion into a cultural center in the 1990s. Today, Rojc is home to over 100 organizations, including art studios, NGOs, and cultural initiatives. It’s renowned for its alternative cultural scene, hosting exhibitions, concerts, workshops, and festivals that attract locals and visitors.

Pula prison
Next, we’ll explore Pula Prison, established in the 19th century during the Austro-Hungarian rule. It played a significant role in Pula’s judicial system and housed prisoners from various backgrounds. The prison’s architecture reflects its utilitarian purpose, with austere buildings and high walls. Over the years, it has witnessed historical events and social changes, offering insights into the city’s penal history and justice system.

Horthy villa
The Austro-Hungarian villas in Pula stand as architectural landmarks that reflect the city’s historical significance and cultural heritage during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These villas were built primarily during the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s rule over the region, showcasing various architectural styles influenced by the prevailing trends of the time. Among these villas, Villa Horty in Pula holds particular prominence.

Former military hospital
Our tour continues to the he Military Hospital, built in 1861. , is a historicist structure with a U-shaped layout. Originally serving the Austro-Hungarian navy, it had about 500 beds.

Church of Our Lady of the Sea
The Naval Church in Pula, today known as the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Sea, was built in the late 19th century for the needs of the Navy. It is located in Pula’s southern district of Sveti Polikarp, near the Naval Cemetery, overlooking the military harbor. The church is a monumental three-nave basilica with a transept, richly decorated with stone sculptures and mosaics, and is known for its alternating rows of white and red stone.

Naval park
As the final stop on our tour, Naval Park (Mornarički Park) offers a serene conclusion amidst Pula’s maritime history. Located adjacent to the Naval Hospital and Naval Church, this green oasis provides a tranquil retreat with shaded pathways, landscaped gardens, and benches for relaxation. Established as a recreational area for naval personnel and their families, the park’s design emphasizes natural beauty and historical significance.
