The name’s usage has sparked disputes between Croatia and Slovenia. While Slovenia registered it as a Protected Designation of Origin, their Teran wines are primarily made from a distinct variety called Refošk. To resolve the conflict, the European Union permitted Croatia to use the name, albeit with a caveat: wines must be labeled as Teran – Croatian Istria (Hrvatska Istra). Despite Slovenia’s legal challenge against the European Commission’s decision, the General Court of the EU upheld the initial ruling in 2020, dismissing Slovenian objections.
  • Teranino: A distinct Croatian liqueur, blends fruit or pomace brandy with Teran red wine, lending it its name. This sweetened concoction is infused with a variety of botanicals like cinnamon, cloves, star anise, lemon, vanilla, or fennel, resulting in a ruby red liqueur boasting earthy, herbaceous, fruity, and spicy notes. With an ABV typically ranging from 15 to 20%, Teranino is best enjoyed chilled as either an aperitif or a digestif, served neat or on the rocks.
  • Biska: A traditional Istrian brandy, is infused with mistletoe, imparting a unique flavor profile. Typically, it’s crafted from komovica, a grape marc-based brandy, blended with dry mistletoe leaves and left to macerate until fully infused. The color of Biska can range from light yellow to dark green, depending on the mistletoe used. Variations may also include different base spirits like lozovača or jabukovača, offering diverse flavor experiences while maintaining the essence of this cherished Istrian tradition.
  • Travarica: A rakija variation, undergoes infusion with aromatic herbs indigenous to the coastal regions of Croatia. This traditional spirit is crafted from pomace or fruit brandy, with the selection and quantity of herbs varying based on locality and season. Common herbs used include sage, fennel, mint, chamomile, rosemary, lemon balm, anise, myrtle, thyme, marjoram, wormwood, and bay leaves. These herbs are allowed to macerate for varying durations, from days to months, before filtration removes the plant matter, leaving behind a uniquely flavorful spirit.
